Several distinctions can be finded between dress eyewear (eyewear worn for everyday purposes) and safety glasses (eyeglasses worn specifically for eye protection). No matter how sturdy a pair of eyeglasses appear, they must meet specific criteria to qualify as safety glasses unless.
Frame Requirements
About Frame Durability
Safety frames must pass series of stress tests which are not required for dress eyewear. Once these tests are passes by a frame,it can be marked as a safety frame.
About Frame Markings
All safety frames have a "Z87" mark on the temples and on the front of the frame, indicating compliance with the ANSI Z87.1 safety eyewear standard. So without the "Z87" markings,a frame will not be recognized as a safety frame.

Safety glasses (as opposed to "regular" glasses) don’t correct your vision, whereas regular glasses do. Safety glasses are made out of thick plastic that cannot be penetrated very easily. Regular glasses are made out of wire and glass and won’t ford you much protection when working with power tools or shooting guns (or whatever you need to safety glasses for).

Safety glasses will always have their lenses made of impact resistant material. An example of impact resistant material is Polycarbonate which has a refractive index of 1.59. This is the same material they normally use in bullet-proof windows because of their impact resistant property. Fashion glasses will not always be made of this material.

All safety frames have to be marked with "Z87.". Any frame not marked is against OSHA saftey standards. Also, lenses have to be a minimum 3 mm thick in the center, and the lenses have to be marked "sand etched" by the lab that made them. The etchings for plano or no prescription would be top center, and prescription lenses would be etched at the upper temporal sides.
And, safety frames can be either plastic or metal, and I have even seen a couple of drill mounts.
